Desert Locust Stopped by Tibetan Highlands during the 2020 Upsurge

چکیده
Desert locust is an important pest to agriculture. In 2019–2020, a major upsurge originated in the southern Arabian Peninsula and gradually spread east Africa, then south-west Asia, as far Pakistan India, even reaching Nepal, resulting agricultural losses. For first time, few swarms entered Tibet. Using field observations experiments, we studied their path Tibetan plateau behavior at these very high altitudes. The locusts moved up valleys from low-lying areas (1700 m) much higher elevations (5400 m). low temperatures humidity put them under severe stress; activities were limited, they did not survive long or produce local offspring. It clear that high-altitude environmental conditions Himalayan mountains provided natural barrier limited northward expansion of desert populations.

The involvement of associative learning cues has been demonstrated in several stages of feeding and food selection. Short neuropeptide F (sNPF), an insect neuropeptide whose effects on feeding behavior have previously been well established, may be one of the factors bridging feeding and learning behavior. Recently, it was shown in Drosophila melanogaster that the targeted reduction of Drome-sNP...
متن کاملPreventing desert locust plagues: optimizing management interventions
Solitarious desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), inhabit the central, arid, and semi-arid parts of the species’ invasion area in Africa, the Middle East, and South-West Asia. Their annual migration circuit takes them downwind to breed sequentially where winter, spring, and summer rains fall. In many years, sparse and erratic seasonal rains support phase chang...
متن کاملComparative Isoenzyme Electrophoreses between the Brown-Spotted Locust, Cyrtacanthacris tatarica, and the Desert Locust, Schistocerca gregaria
The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), and the brown-spotted locust, Cyrtacanthacris tatarica (Linné) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), were collected from Saudi Arabia to investigate their relationships. Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoreses of five arbitrarily chosen metabolic enzymes extracted from the leg muscles of the two locust taxa were conducted. These e...
متن کاملThe vibrational startle response of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria.
Substratum vibrations elicit a fast startle response in unrestrained quiescent desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria). The response is graded with stimulus intensity and consists of a small, rapid but conspicuous movement of the legs and body, but it does not result in any positional change of the animal. With stimuli just above threshold, it begins with a fast twitch of the hindlegs generated ...
متن کاملChanges in energy reserves during flight of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria.
-1. Amounts of glycogen and glucose in locust haemolymph and fat body increase during the first 15 rain of flight but later fall to below the resting values. 2. Amounts of trehalose in haemolymph and glycogen in gut wall decline throughout flight. 3. Variations in the concentrations of free amino acids in haemolymph are reported. 4. The concentration of lipid in the haemolymph increases to abou...
